FIRST Project is committed to providing volunteers with ongoing support and supervision. Volunteers agree to review and implement each policy, and FIRST Project will be responsive to questions, concerns and suggestions.
1. Every volunteer has the right to a work in an environment free of harassment in any form. Any harassment encountered should be reported as quickly as possible to the supervisor.
2. Before becoming active in the volunteer program, every volunteer completes an application form, provides references, and participates in an interview as well as an orientation session.
3. Volunteers are encouraged to attend all in-service training sessions.
4. Volunteers in ongoing relationships with clients work under the guidance of a staff member designated as a “supervisor.”
5. Volunteers are encouraged to communicate with staff on an ongoing basis to share their experiences, concerns, suggestions and questions.
6. Volunteers maintain ethical relationships with all persons with whom they interact. Any personal involvement of a sexual, coercive, or threatening nature is prohibited.
7. Proselytizing of any nature is strictly prohibited. Volunteers will be terminated immediately if they proselytize in any form to a client, including verbal proselytizing, giving written materials, or pressuring the client to attend religious institutions or events.
8. Volunteers respect the privacy of individual clients and uphold FIRST Project’s confidentiality policy.
9. Volunteers avoid client relations or other situations in which they have an actual or potential conflict of interests.
10. Volunteers record and report the hours they invest in the program.
11. The relationship between a volunteer and FIRST Project may be terminated at any time at the will of either party.
12. Volunteers should notify the supervisor when they wish to discontinue or suspend their participation in the Volunteer Program. Two weeks notice is requested.
13. The personal interaction, rather than money, should be the focus of volunteer-client relationships. Social activities with clients should be free or low-cost.
14. Direct contributions and monetary loans from the volunteer to the client are strongly discouraged. A volunteer’s concern that the client’s financial situation is critical should be reported to the supervisor.
15. Occasionally, volunteers may be inclined to consider fund raising for the benefit of an individual client because of critical need. In these unusual instances, the matter should be discussed with the supervisor in order to arrive at a course of action.
16. Volunteers are encouraged to raise questions about any of the above policies and their implementation if they have concerns.
