Funding
The F.I.R.S.T. Project, Inc. is funded by a grant received from the Office of Refugee Resettlement. This grant provides for office space, therapists, case management, interpreters, training, supplies and general operations. In addition, the center has received smaller donations from churches. This money has been used for direct client care in the acquisition of medical care. Occasionally we have been able to provide a client with a small item of clothing, recreational activity or equipment (i.e., bicycle for transportation) with personal donations by staff or community people. We are currently pursuing other sources of funding to further expand our services so that we may see more clients and in more modalities. The continuum of care often needs to extend beyond the therapy room. Funding can provide the resources to strengthen therapy's effectiveness and bring in other elements of healing and growth.
Staff
The FIRST Project, Inc. is staffed by an office manager and four clinical professionals. The Director, Maria Prendes-Lintel, Ph.D provides clinical services as well as administrative and supervision services. Francisca Peterson, MS, LMHP provides clinical services and is also in charge of interpreter's training and supervision. Kimberley Wands, Ph.D, and Scott Walls, MA, LMHP provide clinical services to clients. Hateme Govori and Emir Plicanic provide case management services. Kathy Kohel is the office manager.
Future Plans
Plans include a larger facility so that case managers and group activities including training can be held in-house. Working with community agencies in such programs as Vocational Rehabilitation so as to address the obstacles some of the clients face in their ability to work. Our clinicians are experienced in teaching at the university level and in providing clinical training at the practice site. In the future we would like to be available for master and doctorate level students as a practicum and internship site.
