Community Guides
provide social support to FIRST Project clients through building a supportive relationship. Activities depend on the needs of the client as well as the interests of the client and the volunteer. The volunteer may accompany the client to appointments or social service agencies, or may serve as a tutor in English, computer, or other desired-skill areas. The client and volunteer also enjoy social activities together, spending time doing free or low-cost activities. Time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week (although not necessarily meeting every week), depending on the needs and schedules of clients & volunteers.
Volunteer Drivers
will provide transportation for clients to necessary appointments, usually at FIRST Project, but sometimes to outside medical, dental or social service appointments. Volunteers may be asked to assist or advocate for clients during an appointment. Some clients have an occasional need for transportation, and others have regular weekly appointments. Volunteers may regularly drive one or more clients to appointments weekly, while others may drive once per month.
Volunteer Educators
will raise awareness in the community about torture survivors and the work at FIRST project. They will accept invitations to formal and informal speaking engagements and/or present information at tables during events or fairs. Time commitment varies greatly depending on events, demand and volunteer availability, from once per year to once per month.
Researchers
will research areas of interest relevant to the work at FIRST Project. Potential areas include: transportation, housing and general social services in Lincoln; refugees and immigrants living in Lincoln; the effects of torture on individuals and communities; healing the effects of torture; and the practice of torture worldwide. Information gathered by researchers will serve FIRST Project staff, clients, volunteers, and the community. Time commitment is up to the volunteer, and research can be conducted at the FIRST Project office or from one’s home. Students may be interested in committing a specified number of hours per week to research in order to receive course credit in areas such as sociology, social work and psychology.
Office Assistants
will assist our office manager, Kathy Kohel in duties such as filing, data entry and mailings. Time commitment is up to the volunteer, either on a monthly or weekly basis.
Volunteer Service Providers
will donate their services to clients who are unable to pay for services that they need. These services include: medical, dental, psychiatric and legal services. Volunteer services are also needed in healing arts such as massage, dance, art and music therapies, yoga and tai chi. Volunteers interested in conducting groups or classes can provide their services at FIRST Project or at their own location. Service provider commitment can range from serving one or more clients on a one-time basis, to ongoing care for one or more clients.
